Adam Driver Elaborates On ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Comments Regarding Tone

As a cast member in the Star Wars franchise, you aren’t allowed to say much when it comes to working on the project. For Star Wars: The Force Awakens, details remained secretive before the movie premiered in theaters.

Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) recently made headlines when discussing Star Wars: Episode VIII, he compared VIII to that of Empire Strikes Back and now is clarifying those comments to Vanity Fair.

“What I said was the tone of it was different, I didn’t say that it was gonna be in the vein of [it]—I was using it as an example, so poor example. Next time I should say—I’m trying to think of another sequel to a movie that’s good. When I read the script, it was not what I expected, in the best of ways.”

The original quote from Driver, focused on the tone of Star Wars: Episode VIII.

“It’s great. It’s similar to how The Empire Strikes Back has a different tone. For that people always go “oooh, it’s dark” but I don’t know that it necessarily is. It’s just different in tone in a way that I think is great and necessary but also very clear. He trusts [that] his audience is ready for nuance and ambiguity. He’s not dumbing anything down for someone and that’s really fun to play.”

Starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran and Benicio del Toro, Star Wars: Episode VIII opens in theaters on December 15, 2017. Are you looking forward to the movie?
