‘Baby Driver’ Drives Off With $2.1M In Tuesday Previews

Baby Driver Edgar Wright
Bolstered by good reviews, director Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver opened to $2.1M on its Tuesday night previews, a strong start for an R-rated non-franchise movie.

According to The Hollywood ReporterBaby Driver made off with $2.1M last night in 2,606 theaters ahead of its 3,100-theater opening today. The movie was released a few days ahead of Universal’s Despicable Me 3, which is expected to be a big hit, as the movie is intended to be R-rated counter-programming to the animated franchise. With glowing reviews from critics which outmatch almost every other wide release currently playing in the United States right now, the good start could give the movie a strong boost going into its opening weekend.

Sony previously released information claiming that their expectations for the film are for it to make millions in the mid-teens over the five-day period, but rival studios are projecting a much rosier picture with a $20M+ total. Given that the film is a mid-budget movie at only a $34M production budget before advertising costs, the latter would be a great start especially if the film’s word-of-mouth works in its favor. Sony and Marvel Studios will release their co-produced tentpole Spider-Man: Homecoming the weekend after this (which is also getting some great responses from fans and critics who have seen it early), so hopefully Baby Driver will find a way to hold well as Spidey takes the #1 spot.

Baby Driver is off to the races as the film is playing in theaters right now. Its cast includes Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Jon Bernthal, Eiza González, Flea, and Lanny Joon.
