Donald Glover Talks ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ & Lando Rumors

Donald Glover is one of the most talented artists in Hollywood. Many may recognize him for his work in comedy. Perhaps most well known for his role as Troy Barnes in Community, Glover is also a rapper under the stage name, Childish Gambino, a stand-up comedian and served as a writer on 30 Rock. His newest TV show, Atlanta will premiere on Tuesday September 6 on FX.

Glover also has some movies under his belt, having appeared in Magic Mike XXL and The Martian. A few months back, Glover was announced to have been cast in Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming. Although his role remains unknown, fans were over the moon with excitement over Glover’s addition, especially after the viral #Donald4Spiderman campaign a few years back.

The actor was in an interview with Time, promoting his new show and was asked about his experience filming the new Spider-Man movie. Glover seemed to enjoy working on the production quite a bit.

The movie was fun to shoot. I’m glad I got the opportunity. You don’t want it to feel like some sort of affirmative action. This wasn’t that at all. I know the director, he’s doing a really good job and good ideas.

He was also asked about recent reports that he is indeed the first choice to play young Lando Calrissian in the currently untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story. Glover discussed the impact that the Star Wars franchise had on him when he was young.

I mean, I grew up on it. My dad was a big fan. I had all the toys when I was little. I had a Darth Vader with the lightsaber he has. It was cool. It’s a dynasty. It’s like the bible. I love that franchise.

As someone who has followed his career since Community, I am more than happy to see that Donald Glover’s career is taking off. As cool as it would have been to see him portray Spider-Man, the next best thing was to cast him in the newest movie. Although all bets are off on who he plays, I am excited to see what sensibilities he will bring to the role.

And as for him as Lando Calrissian? Not only is he Disney and LucasFilm’s first choice, but he was my first choice as well. He epitomizes the smoothness of the character, and he has the comedic sensibilities that would jive really well with directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. If he gets cast, then thank the maker!

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7, 2017.
