‘Dunkirk’: Harry Styles’ Level Of Fame Was Not Known To Christopher Nolan

Harry Styles
Director Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk will depict the evacuation of Allied soldiers from Dunkirk, France and One Direction member Harry Styles will be portraying a British Soldier in the film. However, while Styles may be known to younger audiences, Nolan and star Mark Rylance were unaware of just how famous the singer and songwriter was when he was cast in the role. In an interview with Billboard, Nolan and Rylance explained how they became aware of Styles’ fame and the young actor himself discussed his experience working on the film.

Nolan explained that Styles’ fame played no part in helping him land the role, as the extent of his fame was unknown to the filmmaker:

“I don’t think I was that aware really of how famous Harry was. I mean, my daughter had talked about him. My kids talked about him, but I wasn’t really that aware of it. So the truth is, I cast Harry because he fit the part wonderfully and truly earned a seat at the table.”

Academy Award winning actor Mark Rylance explained how working with Styles earned him favor with his niece:

“She was just more excited than anything I’ve ever done because I was going to be acting with Harry Styles. I went up in her estimation. I won the Harry!”

Styles described his experience working on the film and explained why he was overwhelmed by the production:

“I’d say realizing the scale of the production was very overwhelming. I think whatever you imagine kind of a giant film set to be like, this was very ambitious even by those standards. You know the boats and the planes and the volume of bodies … it was pretty amazing.”
