Dwayne Johnson Talked With DC About The Future Of Their Films

Dwayne Johnson Black AdamWhile fans may be worried about DC films’ future, Dwayne Johnson met with the company to inspire confidence. Johnson, who will be playing the villain Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam movie, says he’s fired up and inspired after the meeting.

“Had a very cool and strategic meeting with the heads of DC Comics about their entire universe. As a hard core DC fan, to get a real sense of the tonal shifts and developments coming in these future movies has me fired up. Something we, as DC fans have all been waiting for. Hope, optimism & FUN. I’m excited about our future together and you should be to.

Even when talking about the the most ruthless villain/anti-hero of all time finally coming to life. Prepare yourselves DC Universe.”

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson DC Films

So whether or not you’ve loved the current DCEU’s offerings, at least if The Rock can be trusted, the future is bright. Hopefully the films can begin to receive both great reception from fans and critics alike; as well as differ their films tonally so they don’t all feel the same. Originality may be key to the continued success of the superhero genre, something DC can certainly help to foster.

The tones of the films were always going to be different. Just look at Suicide Squad’s major overhaul on style and comedy in comparison to Snyder’s more somber films, while Patty Jenkins has been promising for months, a Christopher Reeve Superman Wonder Woman film in tone and spirit. And Shazam has been discussed also for many months as having a much different, more uplifting tone than the other DC films. I mean its about a kid who pretty much has the most awesome wish ever granted and becomes a god-like superhero. Its not like he’s gonna be weary of the title or anything, he’s gonna love the sh*t out of it.

I have a feeling Shazam isn’t coming to the DCEU. Johnson came to the WB execs and said “hey i want to be in DC!” The execs blew their loads then proceeded to look for a character to plug him in. Now Black Adam is a plug and play DC villain, very much like deathstroke, no need for Shazam to be included.

      • 12stepCornelius

Who’s to say. They could ditch Billy Batson completely, and I would understand if they wanted to focus on other characters or leave room for new heroes years down the road. We’ll just have to wait and see I guess. I’d love a Shazam/Superman team up or face off though.

      • Seb

They’d be stupid not to include Shazam, like 12step said, he’s the ultimate wish fulfillment, it’s what made Cap more popular than Superman when he was introduced.

Finding someone to play Shazam is the problem, they need to be a good enough actor to convincingly play a kid in an adult body, comedic timing and look like a superhero. And Patrick Warburton is too old for him now.

        • Maxi Iroh

Armie Hammer and Channing Tatum can definitely do that.

        • JNAZ

Let me rephrase, I have a feeling Shazam isn’t coming to DCEU anytime soon. If you look at the DC movie slate there’s just nowhere to add a Shazam movie for the next 2-3 years. Not to mention DC is constantly trying to squeeze in spinoffs and sequels almost weekly into that movie slate. This is why i think they’re going to add DJ’s black adam to an already existing movie project (MOS 2?) instead of giving him a movie of his own. Who know, maybe if black adam is a hit, DC will work on a spinoff Shazam movie.

          • SAMURAI36

Oh okay. That’s a bit different. But we haven’t heard anything about them moving Shazam’s release date. Now granted, I would like Shazam to happen sooner than later, but I still think it’ll happen when they originally said it would.

      • SAMURAI36

Where on earth are you getting this from? The Rock just met with Geoff Johns about the DCEU.

        • JNAZ

I said I had a “feeling” which usually means it’s a personal opinion. I have no inside info nor have I ever claimed to have one, just putting together different things I’ve read or seen and coming up with a personal theory. First, DJ’s instagram post with Henry Cavill.. could be just a photo of two actors with the same agent having drinks, or could be DCEU related. Well a few weeks before that, there was an announcement that MOS 2 is in the works. Then, a couple of weeks after the Cavill/DJ instagram photo DJ is talking with DC execs? Add to that the fact that DJ has been proclaiming himself black adam for about 3 years now and all that time there has been no mention of Shazam. I can be totally off of course but hey, that’s why it’s called a fan theory.

    • Axxell

It would make sense…but then again, this is DC we’re talking about. They never spoke of making films “fun”, until they got the backlash from BvS.

      • Napi

So, you never get tired of being a facking idiot, eh?

You better LEAVE now to twitch

        • Axxell

Obviously you never get tired of being a FAIL.

          • Napi

HAHAHAHA nice one! Keep going dipsh¡t or LEAVE and watch your boring Marveloser stuff

          • Axxell

Good thing my “boring Marveloser stuff” doesn’t put it’s own actors to sleep like your Dull Crap movies…

          • Napi

Because they dont even watch them, thats why, they feel shame about it 😡
“You FAIL again” <— dipsh¡t f@g phrase xDxD

          • Axxell

Hmm, let’s see who’s more proud of their work:

          • Napi

I loved how they used the soundtrack of such a hated movie for this video, nice choice.
BTW Evans was laughing at the Dormamu I came to bargain thing? It was pretty shameful just like your “you FAIL boo boo” xDxD

          • Axxell

You’d know shame…having to pretend in public that you like BvS…LOL! Affleck’s face says it all!

          • Napi

            ANSWERING

          • Axxell

            RAN

      • 12stepCornelius

FUN came from bloggers and critics. However, they did in fact say prior to BvS’s release, Chris Terrio more specifically that the films would become more optimistic after BvS, because they were treating the MoS/BvS/JL movies as a trilogy, BvS being like Empire Strikes Back or Two Towers, whereas Justice League would be like Return of the Jedi, Return of the King, a new age of hope. Its literally these superheroes emerging from the darkness, fighting back against it, and changing the world for the better.

        • Axxell

Terrio’s side note about future films being more “optimistic” is really the only time they kinda touch on the subject when people started complaining about the look and tone of the second DCCU movie prior to the release of BvS…Nowadays it seems like every time someone from the production crew talks about a future DC film, they’re talking about how much “fun” it’s gonna be…

          • 12stepCornelius

Of course they are. Again bloggers and critics have basically demonized any movie that doesn’t have “FUN”. So now you’re seeing DC directors promising their movies will be fun as well. I know, it somewhat disappoints me, knowing they likely had a completely different plan in mind. I was expecting some dark, underwater Game of Thrones-esque power struggle conflict between Arthur Curry and Ocean Master, then James Wan promises a “high seas swashbuckling adventure with flavors of Romancing the Stone”. I just hope they are able to find some middle ground and keep the WB’s adult drama elements while lightening the mood a bit for audiences.

          • Axxell

Well, the DCCU was made with the intention of making money, and I doubt you alone can make up the expected profit in ticket sales. Until that’s possible, they’re gonna have to keep making films for the general public who are fans of the comics and animated series, who want to see an adaptation that is true to the tone of those products, something that has been missing from the first couple of DCCU films.

          • 12stepCornelius

Keyword “films”. Films are very different from comic books, making it a irrelevant issue when bringing comic books to life. There’s no implication that they should have brought the same exact tone from the comic books straight to the films. Marvel isn’t doing it but their movies have that FUN formula so everyone buys it. DC wanted to start somber and then lean towards uplifting but everyone freaked out right from the gate and despised the movies for unfortunate reasons. The fact is however, they were in fact always going to lighten the mood by the time the Justice League assembles.

          • Axxell

I remember Kevin Fujiwara distinctly saying that the DCCU was gonna be differentiated by the “serious” tone (even going so far as to compare it against Marvel movies).

That’s why no one buys it.

  • HiImJoshSandovalandiHaveCable

Lol dc is trash… the provide new jokes daily almost hourly to poke fun of thr company and their films with.

    • Napi

      WHAT?

    • SAMURAI36

      Wow, you sound incredibly stupid.

      • HiImJoshSandovalandiHaveCable

Several months from now. Ill still be making fun of the dceu while ww and jl underperforms and gets rated rotten.

And ull be here defending ? ?

  • Marquis de Sade

They’ve been talkin’ bout makin’ this movie for how long now? – This promised production rivals Dr. Dre’s “DETOX” in the URBAN LEGEND department.

    • JNAZ

Right? I think the first couple of years it was more DJ campaigning for a black adam solo movie, and there were several rumors/reports that it was in the works but nothing came to fruition. If you notice in his quotes above, he’s using terms like “our future together” and “DC Universe”. Which leads me to believe that he’s become a team player and that he’s now going to be integrated into the bigger universe as opposed to having a solo film.

      • SAMURAI36

But that’s no different from what was likely planned anyway. The Rock had been teasing a fight with Superman since before BVS. And Shazam himself is a member of the JL, while Black Adam has become a JL villain himself.
