The Fast and the Furious franchise has been going strong for over 17 years and it has no signs of slowing down. The franchise has been re-energized after 2011’s Fast Five and each film since then have been box office hits. The films aren’t known for complex plots but for outrageous and exciting action sequences which always make fans wonder how they are going to raise the bar.
F. Gary Gray, the director of The Fate of the Furious has mentioned the possibility that the franchise will head to outer space during future installments. It seems like this is a running joke around the film industry that would seem completely out of the question, but not for this franchise.
This is the same franchise that has seen characters jump out of cars, drive across skyscrapers, drive cars out of planes, take down a tank and even outrace a submarine. It would almost seem fitting to see Dom and his family be recruited by NASA to help save the world and head to outer space.
F. Gary Gray recently spoke to Screen Rant where he said discussions for future installments haven’t begun but anything is possible:
“Outer space? Listen, I wouldn’t rule anything with this franchise. When I read submarine I’m like ‘OK, anything’s possible’. [Laughs] You never know. I haven’t read “Dom on Mars” yet but again, you just never know.”
This would almost seem too ridiculous to be true but The Fate of the Furious broke the worldwide record for opening weekend after it brought in over $500 million in three days and finished it’s box office run with over $1.2 billion.
A box office performance like this means that even if the films seem completely ridiculous, people are still enjoying them and are invested in the characters and the story. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see Dom and his family on Mars in the near future.
Fast & Furious 9 is officially dated for release on April 19, 2019.
