‘The Flash’: Grant Gustin On How The Speed Force Will Change Barry

Grant Gustin The Flash

The previous season of The Flash concluded with Barry entering the Speed Force as punishment for creating Flashpoint. Entrusting Wally to protect Central City and encouraging Iris to move on in his absence, fans expect the scarlet speedster will find a way to return at some point during next season, though certainly not without consequences. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, stars Grant Gustin and Candice Patton discussed how Barry’s time in the Speed Force will change him and affect his relationship with Iris.

Gustin revealed that Barry will be a different man when he returns to Central City:

“The way I see it is, time is non-linear and everything is happening at once in the Speed Force. In some ways he’s had an awakening and he’s had a rebirth. Our first episode is called ‘Reborn,’ and it is a rebirth for Barry, but he’s kind of scrambled, too, because he’s experienced so much so quick over the course of six months, even though for him it was an eternity. He’s not Barry when we see him for the first time.”

Patton explained why Barry and Iris will have to work on their relationship when he returns from the Speed Force:

“There’s going to be some trust issues. He left and didn’t really ask her or discuss it with her. He just kind of does things and comes back and says, ‘I hope you’re okay with that.’ They’re going to have to really work on their relationship before they actually tie the knot — if and when he comes out. There’s going to be some work that needs to be done before they actually put rings on each other’s fingers.”

Running up against an evil time remnant version of yourself is something no one should ever have to do, but that’s exactly what faced Barry Allen (aka The Flash) as he fought to save the life of fiancée Iris West from the God of Speed known as Savitar. Barry’s victory was short-lived, however, as an unbalanced Speed Force began to wreak havoc on Central City, forcing Barry to sacrifice himself for the greater good. With The Fastest Man Alive now trapped inside an extra-dimensional energy, and unknown dangers lurking in the shadows, it will be up to Team Flash to free Barry from his own personal Hell.

The Flash season 4 will premiere on Tuesday, October 10 at 8:00 PM ET on The CW.
