No films have showcased some of the more creative and “out-there” designs within the Marvel Cinematic Universe than the two Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Right from the first film, we’ve seen a beautiful marriage between the artistry from the comics and James Gunn’s filmmaking sensibilities.
It’s unbelievable that those incredible designs got rocketed up to 11 with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Whether it is the gleaming gold found throughout the Sovereign, or the frenetic colors of Ego the Living Planet, the artists behind Marvel’s latest blockbuster have really outdone themselves.
Another aspect in which the designs really shine are within the costumes. Each member of the Guardians have such a distinct look to them that helps them stand out from each other. Much like how the Avengers have distinguishable suits, the Guardians’ uniforms also help define their personalities.
Costume designer Judianna Makovsky had the opportunity to discuss bringing the costumes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to life. Makovsky, who is a three-time Academy Award-nominee shared her approach to bringing Gunn’s vision to life:
The costumes in the first movie were absolutely brilliant, but I think James wanted to go from there and make them a little bit more real, and like I said, have a bit more of a rock star feel to it. So they were a little more slim-fit and just a little bit more reality-based, rather than superhero-based. In keeping with the same techniques that the clothes were made in the first film, we just went from there and did new versions that were a little more slim, a little less crazy.
Marvel Studios Visual Development Supervisor Andy Park shared some of his concept art for Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) on his Instagram page. First, this approved concept design for Star-Lord highlights this “relaxed rock star vibe.”
This was the approved concept design I did of Starlord for #GuardiansoftheGalaxyVol2 James didn't want a big change in his look but wanted a more relaxed rock star vibe with this one. @prattprattpratt is a rock star regardless of the costume #starlord #who #gotg #conceptart #costume #outfit #illustration #digitalart #digitalpainting #instaart #instaartist #그림스타그램 #그림그리기
Also, Park’s shared one of his earlier variations for Mantis:
Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
Written and directed by James Gunn and starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters now.
The Films Of The Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ranked From Worst To Best
It’s a perennial love of pop culture lovers like ourselves (and many other outlets) to celebrate Marvel’s latest cinematic offering with another thing we love: ranking their films. With Captain America: Civil War behind us and Doctor Strange right around the corner, it’s that time of year again. The only difference here is that this list is definitive. No more lists needed, friends, you can call your people and bring them home. I got this.
