James Wan Denies Michael K. Williams Black Manta Casting Report

Recently, it was reported that the villain for James Wan’s upcoming Aquaman movie would be Black Manta. Since then, fans have brought up ideas for actors who can portray the antagonist set to face off Jason Momoa’s King of Atlantis. Safe to say, one of the most popular choices among fans has been actor Michael K. Williams.

The actor known for his exemplary work on The Wire as Omar Little has been a fan-favorite to jump on the superhero bandwagon for quite some time. Williams was a popular choice from fans to play Black Panther for the Marvel Cinematic Universe before Chadwick Boseman was inevitably cast. The actor himself has expressed interest in playing Black Manta, and recent rumors arose that he was indeed the choice.

Director James Wan addressed this recent report on his Twitter account, denying any credibility behind it, but still complimenting Williams as a performer:

I have to admit, Michael K. Williams would have been a great choice to play Black Manta. Such a dynamic performer that commits to every role he takes, and is certainly due for a big blockbuster role like this one. Let’s hope he hops on the train soon, even if we can’t have him under the sea.

You can next see Aquaman in Justice League, which opens in theaters November 17, 2017.
