Kevin Feige On ‘Captain Marvel’ Benefiting From ‘Wonder Woman’s Success

Captain Marvel Wonder WomanWith the major success of Wonder Woman, the entertainment world is really starting to learn that there is a major interest for female superhero movies. While DC/Warner Bros. finally launched its first female superhero franchise, Marvel is getting ready to bring Captain Marvel to the big screen in 2019.

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, recently chatted with Mashable about how the success of Wonder Woman will be beneficial for Captain Marvel. The Marvel boss went into depth on how they have set their plans for Captain Marvel for a very long time while reflecting on previous female superhero movies.

“Well, for us, you know, our Captain Marvel plans have been set for a long time and a lot of things we’re doing with the characters in the announced movies and what we have planned in the movies we haven’t announced yet have all been pretty set. Because what the question would have been on this junket before that is, ‘Do you think people want to see a female superhero movie? Do you think audiences are ready to go see a big … Are you nervous about Captain Marvel being a big, the first female hero?’

And I would always say no, because there hasn’t been a good one in a long time. There were, you know, 15 years ago, a bunch of bad ones. Did they fail because they were female lead movies? No. They failed because they were not good movies. I don’t have to say that anymore. Thanks to Wonder Woman. Because it just blows that fallacy out of the water.”

Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot as Diana Prince, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Lucy Davis as Etta Candy, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Robin Wright as General Antiope, Lisa Loven Kongsli as Menalippe, Danny Huston as General Erich Ludendorff, David Thewlis as Sir Patrick Morgan, Elena Anaya as Doctor Maru, Ewen Bremner as Charlie, Saïd Taghmaoui as Sameer and Eugene Brave Rock as the Chief, is now playing in theaters.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, is slated to open in theaters on March 8, 2019.

She is one of Marvel’s hottest characters right now, with her own title, as well as features in various Avengers titles. While there are still a lot of things up in the air about the movie, a director hasn’t even been announced yet, things are shaping up well. Nicole Perlman, who penned Guardians of the Galaxy, was tapped to write the screenplay for Captain Marvel, so I’m expecting great things.
