Nathan Fillion Talks Wonder Man’s Potential Future In The MCU

Wonder ManWhile he hasn’t had a large on-screen role, Nathan Fillion definitely exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. In the first installment, he did a voice cameo as an alien prison inmate while in the second one, Fillion was set to play Simon Williams a.k.a. Wonder Man.

Even though his appearance would only serve as an Easter egg through movie posters, it ended up being cut from the film. However, James Gunn, the director of both films, has stated that we could very well see Wonder Man pop up at some point in the MCU and it looks like Fillion is still game for that.

In a recent interview, Fillion chatted about his Wonder Man Easter Egg. While Fillion definitely understood why it had to be cut, he does seem to hope that at some point in the future, Marvel Studios will end up using the character in some capacity.

“I was going to be an Easter egg in the background…[there was] a Simon Williams Film Festival, and I was in all of the movie posters. If you know the Marvel Universe, Simon Williams becomes Wonder Man, becomes an Avenger. So, he’s part of that universe. It was a neat little Easter egg, it was a neat little piece of the universe. It didn’t get into the movie. That’s fine. That happens all the time. I still had the same wonderful experience. But moving forward, I don’t know, let me see what we can do with this opportunity. That’s just a cleverly disguised opportunity. Am I right?”

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Kurt Russell, along with Sylvester Stallone and Michael Rosenbaum, is now playing in theaters.

Guardians of the GalaxyGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is almost upon us, but we’re already talking about what’s next for our favorite ragtag group of cosmic heroes. It’s already been announced that writer/director James Gunn will return for a third outing in the Marvel franchise, with the upcoming sequel getting positive buzz on social media based from early screenings. Of course, the Guardians are also due to return for the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War films as well, teaming up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against Thanos as he gathers the Infinity Stones together to wield ultimate power.

Gunn commented on Facebook that the third film will “conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond.” While Phase 4 hasn’t been officially announced, it’s assumed that this third film will be Marvel Studios’ kick-off movie for their next batch of films, most likely eyeing a May 2020 release.

With a third Guardians of the Galaxy film on the horizon, where could they possibly go for the next movie? Eh… I can’t think of a single Wonder Man story that I actually liked. So they would have to surprise me with how they used him for me to get excited.

They said, I wasn’t excited for Guardians either, and now I’m collecting them, so it wouldn’t be the first time.
