With Logan set to bring an end to Hugh Jackman’s extended tenure as Wolverine, Patrick Stewart’s take on Professor X is expected to go along with him. To promote the film, Stewart held an interview discussing his musings on making the new movie and the X-Men film franchise in general.

In an interview with Collider, Stewart noted that he wasn’t fully aware of how substantial his involvement with the movie would be until he was officially signed on.

“There were hints that there was to be another movie and maybe, maybe Charles [Xavier] might be involved in it. I was happy to be alerted because every association I’ve had with the X-Men franchise has been a good one. And when the confirmation came through, I was delighted – but not expecting too much, because this is the Wolverine extension of the franchise.”

He also mentioned that he was stunned by the originality of the script and thought that the role really allowed him to take the role of Professor X in a previously unexplored direction.

“When I saw the first screenplay – the first draft – I was stunned. Shocked. Surprised. And delighted, because diversity has been such an important part of my life and work for over 50 years. ‘Please, please, give me something new and different to do. Don’t make me repeat the same thing over and over again.’ And this was certainly different… Page by page, I saw this developing. I was intrigued and excited by the prospects that stayed with me until the last moment on camera.”

Furthermore, Stewart offered praise for the cast and crew.

“To be, once more, working with Hugh [Jackman], who I’ve been working with from the very beginning, with James [Mangold], who I’d only done one day’s worth of work in the past, but I enjoyed it, and then to be in the company… Dafne Keen, who is the youngest member of the cast and is quite extraordinary. Working with her and with Hugh was a huge highlight.”

Logan will hit theaters on March 3, 2017 and stars Hugh Jackman as James “Logan” Howlett (Wolverine), Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier (Professor X), Dafne Keen as Laura Kinney (X-23), Boyd Holbrook as Donald Pierce, Richard E. Gant as Dr. Zander Rice, and Stephen Merchant as Caliban. Other X-Men movies that are currently in active development at Twentieth Century Fox include Deadpool 2New Mutants, and X-Men: Supernova.
