‘Power Rangers’: RJ Cyler On How The Blue & Green Rangers Would Interact

Power Rangers Green Ranger
The Power Rangers reboot introduced audiences to a brand new version of the titular team, but the film also concluded by teasing that Tommy Oliver, a.k.a. the Green Ranger, would be making an appearance in the future. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Power Rangers star RJ Cyler, who played Billy Cranston/Blue Ranger, revealed how he believes his character would react to Tommy Oliver.

Cyler explained that while Billy would welcome the new recruit, his loyalty would be to Jason Scott/Red Ranger:

“Billy is never that person to be like, “Oh, get away!”, right? But, it’s almost like if my friends are cool with it, I’m cool with it. It’s like a loyalty thing. So, Tommy Oliver could come in and respectively be at the same level as Jason in everybody else’s eyes. But to Billy, Jason is the one that started it. In Billy’s mind, right? It’s like, okay, me and Jason’s friendship started first. So, okay I’m loyal to Jason. We can be friends, Tommy, you know what I’m saying? We can be Rangers, right? But, our leader is that dude right there in the red.”

Cyler added that Billy’s loyalty would extend to rest of the original team:

“Billy would definitely take him in as another brother, but definitely would always make sure that loyalty stays to the regular four. It’s like, okay, I’m not going to be mean to you, but just remember who was there first. Know your place, man!”

In the original series, Tommy Oliver was introduced as an adversary to the original team before he was freed from Rita Repulsa’s spell. After becoming a member of the team, Tommy was widely considered to be second in command and is arguably the most popular Ranger of the entire franchise. Should a sequel move forward, I believe it would be interesting to see that dynamic play out with this new version of the team, especially considering the bond they formed after putting so much effort into becoming a cohesive group. Directed by Dean Israelite, the film stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks and Bill Hader.

Power Rangers is now available on Digital HD and will be available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray on June 27.
