Who Are The Runaways? Meet Marvel TV’s Newest Superheroes

Runaways
Runaways has been one of Marvel’s breakout new heroes of the early 2000s. Created by comic book writer and screenwriter Bria K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina (the comic), Lost, Under The Dome, and many others), Runaways told a tale of a group of young kids who find out that their parents are supervillains. Now every teen thinks that their parents are at least marginally evil. It just happens to really be the case for them.

Their parents are a part of a group called The Pride, a Los Angeles-based criminal syndicate consisting of mutants, aliens, magicians, time travelers, and scientists, who are helping a group called Gibborim bring about the end of the world. While they do that, they pretty much run the West Coast, completely under the radar from groups like The Avengers, X-Men, and everyone else. Their children discover them committing a heinous act and decide to “run away” (hence the title) and try to bring their parents to justice.

Adapting Runaways has been something that everyone has clamored for since it first was a comic. The writing was pretty much made for a TV or a film, as it captured teen angst very well, and also gave some very interesting characters. Because they are on the West Coast, it gave a taste of California live in the Marvel Universe as well, as most characters are on the East Coast, specifically New York. After Iron Man was released to acclaim kicking off the MCU, development for a Runaways movie began. However, it did not come through as Marvel Studios concentrated on the Avengers and all the films that followed.

Fans thought we would never see an adaptation of the Runaways, however, that all changed when it was announced that Hulu would be bringing them to the streaming service. The series would have Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (Gossip Girl) serving as the showrunners. Tamara Becher, who is a writer for the upcoming Netflix “Defenders” show Iron Fist would serve as one of the writers for the show. Most recently, the production and filming dates for Runaways has been announced, and the cast for the show was finally revealed.
