Tom Holland commented on Sony’s plan for Spider-Man’s exit from the MCU had they been unable to reach a new co-producing deal with the Disney-owned Marvel Studios.

Last year, fans were disheartened to learn that Sony and Disney were unable to reach an agreement to continue co-producing the Tom Holland Spider-Man films. While the failure to agree to new terms would have resulted in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man being excised from the MCU, both parties were eventually able to sign off on a deal to co-produce one more standalone film for the wall-crawler and have the character appear in another Marvel Studios project.

Of course, had Sony and Disney been unable to reach a new deal, the former company had a plan in place to move Tom Holland’s Spider-Man out of the MCU. During an interview with MTV News, Tom Holland noted that Sony’s idea for Spider-Man’s potential exit from the MCU was “wonderful” and that the future for the character still would have been bright:

“[The] future for Spider-Man was still very bright with Sony and we had a really, really wonderful idea how we could sort of transition into a Spider-Man without the MCU and Tom Rothman and Amy Pascal were really confidant that they were gonna do justice and make a film of the calibre that Spider-Man requires.”

Fortunately, Spider-Man isn’t leaving the MCU for the time being and Tom Holland noted that he’s grateful to have been part of the process that saw Sony and Marvel return to the negotiating table:

“But that said, I’m really glad to be back in the MCU and to have the team back together because I kind of feel like it’s where he belongs now. I’m really grateful that Bob Iger and Tom Rothman allowed me to be a part of the process of bringing him home, it was a pretty cool experience and also the best bragging rights ever, I saved Spider-Man”

Tom Holland also confirmed that production on his third standalone Spider-Man film begins in July.

Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man is scheduled to be released in theaters on  July 21st of 2021. In the meantime, fan re-watch Tom Holland’s most recent appearance as the web-slinger in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
