The Tomb Raider reboot starring Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft is in the can.
The reboot finds Lara as a bike courier in London, taking college classes rather than running the business empire of her long-missing father until she decides to investigate his disappearance at his last-known location: a tomb on an island located somewhere off the coast of Japan.
Director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) took to Instagram today, posting a video with himself and the crew celebrating the end of the film’s production. You can check it out below.
The film which serves as an origin story for Lara which will force her to discover the courage within, becoming the heroic archaeologist we know as the Tomb Raider. The film takes inspiration from the recent reboot of the video game that released in 2013 which followed the archaeological graduate she was shipwrecked on the fictional island of Yamatai off the coast of Japan. Yamatai itself was home to the Sun Queen who was rumored to possess shamanistic powers. In order to survive, Lara had to discover the strength within, forging herself into the heroic archaeologist we know as the Tomb Raider.
Tomb Raider also features Killjoys and Black Mirror actress Hannah John-Kamen who plays Croft’s flatmate and best friend, as well as Into the Badlands star Daniel Wu as Lu Ren, a ship captain who will team up with Lara on the quest to find her father played by Dominic West (The Wire).
Walton Goggins stars as the villain, which is listed as Father Mathias on IMDB, however, this has not yet been confirmed. In the video game, Father Mathias was a plane crash survivor who lead a cult known as the Solarii Brotherhood that worships the Sun Queen of Yamatai. It’s also possible Goggins could be playing the character of James Whitman. Whitman was a television producer in the game who also the lead archaeologists on the expedition to Yamatai. Ultimately, Whitman turned antagonist after he allowed himself to be captured along with Lara by the inhabitants of Yamatai and lost himself in his fascination of the islanders and the Sun Queen.
The reboot which shot in South Africa is an MGM and Warner Bros co-production with GK Films. Graham King produced the film from a script written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Gary Barber and Tim Headington also produced with Drew Crevello, Cassidy Lange, Patrick McCormick and Denis O’Sullivan who serving as exec producers.
Tomb Raider is currently slated to hit theaters on March 16, 2018.
