‘Transformers’ Producer Shares New Story Details On Bumblebee Spinoff

Transformers Bumblebee
Transformers: The Last Knight has arrived in theaters and the fifth installment of the live-action film series features the large-scale set pieces to which fans have becomes accustomed. However, the upcoming Bumblebee spinoff promises to be a more character-driven and intimate film than it’s predecessors. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura shared new details the Bumblebee spinoff’s story and discussed how the film will distinguish itself from previous entries in the franchise.

With the outlet confirming that Bumblebee will appear in his classic yellow Volkswagen Beetle form, di Bonaventura discussed how the film will differentiate itself from previous Transformers films:

“The interesting thing about doing a spin-off is it has to have some familiarity with the franchise, and then it has to have its own distinct qualities for it to stand on its own.”

di Bonaventura also shared new details on the relationship between Bumblebee and the female lead, revealing that the Deceptions will play a role in the film:

“It’s the story of a 17-, 18-year-old girl who, through a series of events, she and Bumblebee find each other, and they make each other whole. Bumblebee’s a very loving character. He’s got a lot of heart, so of course the idyllic life of these two is interrupted by the evil Decepticons. And how are they going to be able to deal with the problem without Optimus and without everybody else?”

The outlet adds that Paramount will try to see if Hasbro properties, including M.A.S.K., could become part of their developing Transformers cinematic universe.

“The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock).

There comes a moment in everyone’s life when we are called upon to make a difference. In Transformers: The Last Knight, the hunted will become heroes. Heroes will become villains. Only one world will survive: theirs, or ours.”

Directed by Michael Bay, the film stars Mark Wahlberg, Isabela Moner, Stanley Tucci, Laura Haddock, Anthony Hopkins, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Santiago Cabrera, Jerrod Carmichael, Liam Garrigan, Peter Cullen and John Goodman.
