ValerianRecently, I got a chance to check out the beautiful new trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and it was so much fun. In a world full of franchises and films we feel like we’ve seen 1000 times before, Valerian offers something fresh for viewers to get to see. The film follows the journey of Valerian and Laureline and their adventure protecting the planet Alpha. With the trailer officially released, you can check it out below.

We recently had the chance to sit down with Besson and this is what he had to say about Valerian, Sequels and what books you should read to prepare for the film:

When asked which book to start off with if you’re new to the series, Besson said the following:

“The first few are really the best. I don’t know the title in English, La Cité des eaux mouvantes, Bienvenue sur Alflolol and the one that we take the film from, which is the the Ambassador of the Shadows in English.”

While he wouldn’t reveal which album he’d choose from for a potential sequel, Besson did mention that he’s already started writing it and that he’d love do it:

“No because I’m writing already. I like to be ready in case it’s working. If it doesn’t work you’re always ready. There’s nothing to prep. But, if we’re lucky and people like the film, yeah I would love to do a second one for sure because I love the characters and they are fun together. Every time I see Cara and Dane I would love to do one more.“

What did you think of the trailer? Will you be seeing this when it comes out in July? Sound off in the comment section.

In the 28th century, special operatives Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) maintain order throughout the universe for the government of the human territories. Under orders from their commander (Clive Owen), the duo embark on a mission to Alpha, an intergalactic city where diverse species share their technology and resources for the betterment of all. The ever-expanding metropolis is also home to sinister forces that jeopardize the future of mankind.

Besson — who also directed La Femme Nikita, The Professional and Lucy — will direct Valerian and has had his eyes on the franchise since he was 13. Based on the French comic books of the same name, many believe that the series inspired the likes of Star Wars and Avatar. The film will star Dane DeHaan, Carla Delevingne, Rihanna, Clive Owen, John Goodman, and Ethan Hawke. Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets hits theaters on July 21st, 2017
