While the Star Wars Universe is expanding on the big screen, with the sequel trilogy and the anthology films, there have been discussions about possibly doing a live-action series on the small screen for years. However, with Disney purchasing Lucasfilm and the new films now taking off, the TV plans have somewhat been in limbo for the past few years.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, ABC president Channing Dungey was asked about what the status of a possible TV show is, and while discussions have happened, it doesn’t seem like one is taking off anytime soon.
“That was sort of a conversation at TCA that got blown way out of proportion. We have had some conversations in general about wanting to find a way to bring something from the Lucas Star Wars Universe to ABC, but that’s far into the future. The focus at the moment for Lucas is on the current stuff that they’re doing on the film side and then, of course, they do have the stuff that they are doing on XD.”
Last August, Dungey was asked about the potential of a live-action TV show based on the successful franchise and this is what she had to say back then.
“Oh, as a fan, I would absolutely love to say ‘Yes,’” she said. “The conversations with Lucas, we have had conversations with them and will continue to have conversations with them. I think it would be wonderful if we could find a way to extend that brand into our programming.” It’s all a little bit hush-hush. That company exists under a big shroud of secrecy. If you feel Marvel’s secretive, [Lucasfilm] takes it to a whole other level … [Talks] are ongoing. We don’t have an official timeline yet.”
Currently, the only Star Wars show that’s on air is Rebels that recently returned from its hiatus. You can check out the trailer for the second half of Season 3 below.
Star Wars Rebels Season 3 airs on Saturday nights at 8:30 PM on Disney XD.
