Back in April 2015, it was revealed that American Crime creator John Ridley was working on a secret Marvel television show for the ABC Network. The project was described as “reinventing an existing Marvel superhero character or property” for the network.
However, we still haven’t heard anything about what the character or property might be and there has been very few updates on the project over the past two years. In a recent interview with ABC President Channing Dungey, she was asked for updates on the Ridley project and according to her, it seems to be very much alive.
“Yeah, so John is working on a rewrite of that script for Marvel at the moment. We have not seen a new version of it. He’s been on production of his show, over in London, and on season 3 of American Crime, so those are the things that have been top of mind for him of late. But I have heard from Marvel that he is working on a revision to that script.”
The Marvel TV line-up on ABC currently consist of the long-running series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that Dungey is very bullish on for a Season 5 pick-up. For the 2017-2018 TV season, The Inhumans will be joining ABC as the eight-episode series is set to premiere on Tuesday, September 26.
The last time Ridley spoke about the project was in January 2016 where he described how the show would be socially conscious while still also being straight entertainment.
“You look at Jessica Jones, and [Marvel’s] doing an interesting job of integrating [social consciousness]. I would say in general, graphic novels, their reason for existence is a little different. It’s about wish fulfillment, whether you’re talking about Peter Parker, a young, misunderstood kid trying to figure out his way; if you’re talking about Bruce Wayne, a man who’s dealing with the loss of his parents; whether you’re talking about Clark Kent, an orphan who’s trying to figure out what he’s meant to do without the guidance of his parents.”
Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.: LMD Season 4 returns with new episodes on Tuesday, January 10 at 10/9c on ABC. Make sure to check back at Heroic Hollywood after every single episode of Season 4 for our weekly reviews.
