While the Marvel character Adam Warlock, who we got a tease of in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, isn’t appearing in the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, you can expect to see him in the third installment. In a new interview with Slash Film, director James Gunn confirmed that while Warlock was originally planned to appear in Vol. 2, Gunn decided to cut him out of it.
“I love Adam Warlock. He’s one of my favorite characters. In all truth, I wrote an early treatment where I had Adam Warlock as a part…this is your big scoop, because I don’t think I’ve told anybody this… It was Adam Warlock. He was a big part of the screenplay and I realized it was one character too many. And I adored the character. I adored what we had done with him. I think we did something really creative and unique with Adam Warlock. But it was one character too many and I didn’t want to lose Mantis and Mantis was more organically part of the movie anyway. So I decided to save him for later.”
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also made it clear that fans of the Avengers should not expect to see Warlock appear in Avengers: Infinity War which is currently busy filming, featuring the Guardians in it. According to Feige, Adam Warlock is playing an important role in the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“He’s not. He’s not in Infinity War. But he will be a part of the future Marvel cosmic universe and a pretty important part of that.”
Gunn announced earlier this week on his Facebook page that he was officially returning to write and direct the third installment. Marvel Studios has yet to set a release date yet though for the sequel.
“Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.”
James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, starring Chris Pratt as Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Glenn Close as Irani Rael, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Chris Sullivan as Taserface, Kurt Russell as Ego, along with Sylvester Stallone and Michael Rosenbaum, opens in theaters on Friday, May 5.
