Next year, a reboot of the Tomb Raider film series will arrive in theaters with Academy Award-winning actress Alicia Vikander starring as a young Lara Croft. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the Toronto International Film Festival, Vikander discussed how the latest depiction of the classic video game heroine will feature new and familiar elements.
Vikander expressed her enthusiasm for the Tomb Raider video game series and praised Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of Lara Croft:
“She’s a very loved character like you said, and I grew up playing the games and I was thrilled when I was fifteen and I saw the films with Angelina Jolie. She really made her into an icon with those films.”
Vikander offered fans a preview of Lara Croft’s journey and what audiences can expect from the latest depiction of the beloved character:
“The video game went through quite a change and it got rebooted in 2013. It’s very much an origin story and it’s kind of the next door girl taking on a journey of becoming the action hero that we very much know her to be. So, I definitely think there’s a lot of elements there, both honoring the character that people know of and a lot of new elements that they will hopefully be surprised and engaged to see.”
The Tomb Raider reboot will find a young Lara Croft working as a bike courier in London. Deciding to investigate the disappearance of her long-missing father, Croft’s journey takes her to his last known location: a tomb on an island located somewhere off the coast of Japan.
Directed by Roar Uthaug and written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Tomb Raider also stars Walton Goggins, Hannah John-Kamen, Daniel Wu, and Dominic West as Richard Croft.

5 Superheroes That Deserve Their Own Video Game Universe
World building and universe building are not new. These writing techniques have been around for centuries, long before we even started writing our stories down. I always considered Beowulf to be the precursor to superheroes and comics. However, due to the overwhelming success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the CW DC Universe (or Arrowverse), it seems that the universal world building that has been in comics for three-quarters of a century has finally become a major storytelling point in both the film and TV worlds of superheroes.
Between Rocksteady’s Arkham Trilogy (Batman: Arkham Origins was developed by WB Games Montreal), Telltale Games’ Guardians of the Galaxy, Insomniac Games establishing that their Spider-Man game will be the anchor point for a new Spider-Man universe, and the announcement from earlier this year of a multi-year, multi-game deal between Marvel and developer/publisher Square Enix it seems like the video games will be the next place where sprawling superhero stories will be told.
