Angelina Jolie and Richard Madden were reportedly evacuated from the set of Marvel Studios’ The Eternals after an unexploded bomb was discovered near the shooting location.

According to a report by The Sun, the unexploded bomb was discovered close to the Eternals shooting location on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura, forcing Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, and the rest of the cast and crew to suspend production and leave the set as bomb disposal experts were called in to disarm the device. The outlet notes that the Spanish island held a Nazi base during World War II and the explosive device is believed to be a remnant from the era.

As the bomb was being removed, the cast and crew of The Eternals, including Richard Madden and Angelina Jolie, were relocated to a secure area on the island that was in a safe distance from the device. An insider told the outlet that while the unexploded bomb may have been there for decades, production was not going to risk disturbing the device and setting off an explosion:

“It was obviously terrifying — the bomb could have been there for decades untouched but who knows what might have happened if it was disturbed. Some of the biggest stars in the world were on set and nobody was taking any chances. Fortunately, experts dealt with it.”

Richard Madden, perhaps best known for his role as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, portrays the powerful Ikaris. Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie stars as Thena, a character traditionally depicted as the daughter of Zuras, leader of the Earth-based Eternals and founder of the city of Olympia.

In the comics, the Eternals are a fictional evolutionary offshoot of humanity who possess superpowers and longer lifespans than normal humans. Created by the Celestials over a million years ago, the superpowered beings were the result of genetic experiments that led to the creation of two divergent races: The Eternals and The Deviants.

Often defending Earth from their monstrous counterparts, the Eternals became embroiled in a civil war amongst themselves over whether or not they should conquer the other races. One faction was led by Kronos and the other by his warlike brother named Uranos, with Kronos’ side ultimately winning the conflict while Uranos and his followers were exiled.

Directed by Chloé Zhao from a script written by Matthew K. Firpo and Ryan Firpo, The Eternals stars Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kit Harington, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, and Barry Keoghan.

The Eternals will be released in theaters on November 6, 2020. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Angelina Jolie and Richard Madden.
