Last night, Arrow closed out the winter premiere as the series introduced us to Tina Boland played by Juliana Harkavy (The Walking Dead, Constantine). Boland is a former Central City police detective turned vigilante who will recur throughout the back half of the season. Boland gets Oliver’s attention in next week’s episode titled “Second Chances” when Curtis discovers a mysterious vigilante has been wreaking havoc all across the country. It seems this former detective may very well be our next Black Canary.
In a new interview, executive producer and co-showrunner, Wendy Mericle dished on the addition of Harkavy to the series telling TV Line “We are so excited about Juliana. She is amazing,” and that Harkavy “brings a very different energy, a different vibe to the show.”
By far the most interesting bit Mericle revealed is that Boland will have a deep emotional connection with Oliver and that she is the first member of the new Team Arrow who is closer of an equal to Oliver:
“She’s been through her own sort of hell, her own sort of ‘island.’ She’s got a very tragic backstory. We’ve never really had anybody on the team who is as formidable as he is and really views herself as an equal.”
As for the plans for Boland to become the next Black Canary, Mericle has previously teased that the series will have a new Black Canary in place by the end of the year and Boland sure seems like the best fit to take up the mantle and carry on Laurel’s legacy.
Arrow season 5 continues next Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW with “Second Chances”. Here’s the official synopsis:
