The winter finale of Arrow Season 5 was a sad one for several characters, including Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) as she lost her boyfriend after Prometheus tricked the Green Arrow (Stephen Amell) into killing him. We are a few weeks away from the second half of Season 5 kicking off and one thing we can expect to see is Felicity heading down a dark path. In a new interview with executive producer Marc Guggenheim, he teased that the character’s evolution will tie into the season’s theme of legacy.
“As with all things Arrow, it’s not initially what you think it is and it will ultimately relate to the overall season theme of legacy, but in this case something very specific to Felicity.
However, just because the character will be getting darker due to the circumstances that she is in right now, that doesn’t mean that Felicity will lose the light she brings to the show.
“This is something I was talking to the writers about in the writers’ room — Felicity is a wonderful character because she brings some light into the show. So it’s a darker — it’s an edgier story for Felicity, but at the same time, it’s still Felicity. You want to keep the character.”
The edgier and darker path is, according to Guggenheim, the culmination of everything that she has gone through in the past four-five years with Team Arrow.
“It’s the sum of a bunch of stuff, and Billy was sort of the final straw. It’s also the sum of the fact that Felicity’s been living in this darker world for the last four-plus years now and one of the things we’re exploring is how much what Oliver and Diggle and Roy and Laurel have been doing as vigilantes affected her and affected her way of thinking about things.”
“Who Are You?” — (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (TV-14, LV) (HDTV)
OLIVER WANTS JUSTICE; FELICITY WANTS REVENGE — Worried that Prometheus is right and he is truly a killer at heart, Oliver (Stephen Amell) looks for any ray of hope and finds it in what seems to be the miraculous return of Laurel Lance (guest star Katie Cassidy). However, Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards), still reeling from Detective Malone’s murder, is bent on revenge – she wants to stop Prometheus at any cost. While in prison, Diggle (David Ramsey) fights for his life. Gregory Smith directed the episode written by Ben Sokolowski & Brian Ford Sullivan (#510). Original airdate 1/25/2017.
