‘Arrow’ EP Teases Laurel Lance’s Arc & The Future Of Black Canary

Arrow Black Canary Future Laurel LanceThe mid-season finale of Arrow Season 5 had a big surprise at the end as Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) was waiting for Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) in the team cave as she greeted him. However, due to the trailer that came out a few weeks ago, it was revealed that this isn’t exactly the Laurel that was killed off in Season 4 and that it’s a different version of the character.

In a recent TV Line interview with executive producer and show-runner Marc Guggenheim at the ongoing Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, he was asked about that big reveal and what it means. According to Guggenheim, he had nothing to do with the trailer, but he hinted that what they are introducing in the mid-season premiere, is the beginning of a bigger arc.

“Without commenting on the promo, which I have nothing to do with…[and] without commenting on the spoiler, I would say that the episode ends with laying a very specific seed, with a very specific game plan on our part that we hope to see come to fruition.”

At the beginning of Season 5, we got to see a flashback of the night when Laurel was injured and before she passed away, she made Oliver promise her something. Laurel wanted Oliver to make sure that the Black Canary legacy wouldn’t end with her and to find someone else to pick up the mantle. When executive producer and show-runner Wendy Mericle was asked about whether we will see a new Black Canary in the near future, she gave the following answer.

“There’s definitely a possibility. Look, it’s hard to do a show about Green Arrow without having a Black Canary. I don’t know if it will happen this season or when, but… we are going to be true to origins in the DC universe, and she’s always going to be there.”

OLIVER WANTS JUSTICE; FELICITY WANTS REVENGE — Worried that Prometheus is right and he is truly a killer at heart, Oliver (Stephen Amell) looks for any ray of hope and finds it in what seems to be the miraculous return of Laurel Lance (guest star Katie Cassidy). However, Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards), still reeling from Detective Malone’s murder, is bent on revenge – she wants to stop Prometheus at any cost. While in prison, Diggle (David Ramsey) fights for his life. Gregory Smith directed the episode written by Ben Sokolowski & Brian Ford Sullivan (#510).  Original airdate 1/25/2017.

Then why did they kill her in the first place? I could think of two characters that should have been killed

ONe possible answer I can think of to that is two part:

      1) This Laurel they cooked up over 4 seasons wasn’t really “BLack Canary”, she was just a stand-in in terms of power ( she wasn’t metahuman, just using a gadget) or training. And she was so horribly written in first and third season that many people hated her irrevocably.

      2) The “original” original Black Canary in DC comics belonged to the Earth-2 lineup of Justice Society. She was a part of the team with Alan Scott and Jay Garrick. The integration of Black Canary into main continuity of Earth 1 and subsequent romance to Green Arrow came later. They might be trying to imitate that to a degree if they could “convert” BLack Siren to Canary.
