CW’s hit show Arrow has been a dark origin story for Oliver Queen the past three seasons now. According to executive producer Marc Guggenheim, though, things are about to get a little lighter.

Season 4 may be the show’s largest transition yet. Along with Oliver Queen now finally dawning the Green Arrow mantle instead of just being called ‘Arrow’, Marc Guggenheim says the show is going to shed its darker tone that has drawn comparisoms to Batman Begins. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Guggenheim said:

“Ever since Slade Wilson came to town, the show has been on this very, very dark path, leading to Sara’s death and the culmination of season 3. Our goal was to return the show more in the tone of the first season-and-a-half…It still feels like Arrow, but at the same time, Oliver’s got a new outlook on life. We’re driving conflict to the show in ways that we never would have in the first three years. So it still feels like Arrow, but it’s a different take on the show.”

Showrunner Wendy Mericle also spoke about the tonal shift. Mericle added:

““[Oliver] has more faith in humanity than he did in the past. It’s less about erasing his father’s legacy and more about establishing his.”

After speaking on this matter, Guggenheim also teased a character fans have been clamoring to see on Arrow forever: Green Lantern! While not doing anything earth-shattering like confirming an appearance, Guggenheim decided to tease what we may or may not see of everyone’s favorite Coast City hero:

“There is a nod or two. There is a billboard that people will get a kick out of, and there may or may not be a ring in the season premiere.”

The CW has also released a new trailer for the upcoming season of the show, which you can check out below.

Some big news for everyone’s favorite show about the emerald archer. Do you think a shift away from a darker tone is right for Arrow? Do you think a Green Lantern appearance will happen in the future? Let us know in the comments!

You can catch Green Arrow (and Green Lantern?) on the Season 4 premiere of CW’s Arrow on October 7!
