The Russo Brothers originally wanted to shoot Avengers 4 and Infinity War at the same time but there were two big reasons why that had to change.
Shooting massive films back to back isn’t a new practice because Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3 shot back-to-back, as did the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the latest two Avengers films are no exception. Originally though, the two films were going to shoot at the same time, which is pretty wild considering the massive undertaking that they are.
It seems that Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of Avengers 4 and Infinity War, agreed with that idea because the plan never came to fruition. The Russo Brothers were recently at a Collider Screening Series event where a packed theater of fans got to watch Avengers: Infinity War on the big screen again, followed by a Q&A with the directors. During the Q&A, the Russo Brothers revealed that the story for the films just became too complex and they wanted the two stories to feel truly separate from one another.
They originally planned to shoot both films at the same time but the stories got too complex and they wanted to treat them separately since they are very different films. So the decision was made a few months out to shoot them back to back instead as concurrent.

Infinity War was such a massive film and considering what had to be done to bring it to life, plus the massive expectations that now come with a follow-up to that shocking finale, it’s no surprise that the directors decided to shoot the two projects separately.
