Over this past weekend the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Avengers: Infinity War, past the $1.9 billion mark at the worldwide box office.
Since the film’s release it has quickly become one of the fastest grossing films of all time, becoming the fastest to reach the $1 billion mark worldwide and had the biggest opening weekend of any film in the United States. The film currently sits as the highest grossing film for the year worldwide and the second highest domestically. With this latest mountain scaled, Avengers: Infinity War has become the fourth highest grossing film of all time behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Titanic and Avatar.
In addition, the film is the highest grossing superhero film of all time worldwide and the 6th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to reach the billion dollar mark. Domestically the film is still well behind Black Panther and given the stiff competition it will face throughout the summer it may not be able to surpass it. Given how it is currently dominating the worldwide box office, however, it probably doesn’t need to.
Avengers: Infinity War is now playing in theaters, with a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautisa, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Rudd, Benedict Wong, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, Benicio Del Toro, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor and Josh Brolin. Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
The currently-untitled Avengers 4 features a cast made up of many of the key players in Infinity War — alongside newcomers like Brie Larson and Evangeline Lilly — and is scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2019.
