As Avengers: Infinity War’s release is so close, co-director Joe Russo is already eyeing another epic Marvel showdown. Joe Russo recently clarified which big Marvel war he’d like to take on next and how a certain “Infinity War” sized business deal may allow that to become a reality.
The unprecedented event that is Infinity War will undoutebdly open the doors for Marvel to go deeper into its comic book routs. With that being said how does one top the mega marvel mashup? Joe Russo, half of the directing party of the third Avengers film has mentioned his interest in the Secret Wars. There have been two renditions of this epic battle within the comics and Russo recently clarified in an interview with CBR which one he thinks Marvel would adapt:
“Hopefully they’re about to get their hands on a few of them. Listen, my second favorite character growing up, and one of my prized possessions in my comic book collection is Incredible Hulk #181, which of course is the first appearance of Wolverine. I feel like the mission of the Marvel Universe is to keep expanding and surprising people. Surprise them with casting choices, surprise them with story choices. If we’re moving into this world of crossover events, certainly that affords opportunity for other large-scale stories from the books like Secret Wars — which was another favorite comic of mine as a kid. There’s big potential moving forward if the Fox/Disney deal closes.”
There are two events in the Marvel Universe dubbed Secret Wars. The first Secret War was released in 1984. This showdown had Marvel’s heroes and villains fight it out in a place aptly titled Battleworld. The Secret Wars saw a revival in 2015, this time around the classic Marvel Earth merged with the Ultimates Universe. Since Russo is a grown man, its safe to say he is referring to the first of the Secret Wars and the events that took place on Battleworld.
The events of Secret Wars would be an amazing thing to witness and is easily the best choice in order for Marvel to top Avengers: Infinity War. But as Russo so eloquently pointed out, this epic storyline can only come to life once that deal between Disney and Fox is all said and done. Fans will have to wait to see if Secret Wars will ever hit the screen, but they won’t have to wait much longer for Earth’s Mightiest Heros to take on the Mad Titan Thanos as Infinity War is released publicly tomorrow night.
