Warning! This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War!
In a recent interview, Avengers: Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo addressed whether or not Drax, (Dave Bautista), ‘disappeared’ at the end of the film.
The question was a reference to one of the film’s best jokes. During an otherwise serious scene between Star Lord, (Chris Pratt), and Gamora, (Zoe Saldana), Drax revealed that he had been watching nearby the entire time. He claimed that the reason the two hadn’t picked up on his presence was due to his new ability. According to the the character, as long as he stands perfectly still he become invisible to the naked eye. An idea that was quickly shot down by Star Lord and Gamora. But some fans seem to think that he had the ability.
At the film’s climax, the Avengers were ultimately unable to stop Thanos, (Josh Brolin), from retrieving all of the Infinity Stones. Despite last moment acts of heroism from Scarlet Witch, (Elizabeth Olsen) and Thor, (Chris Hemsworth), Thanos was ultimately able to snap his fingers and wipe out half the universe’s population. Among these casualties were most of the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy including Drax. But some seem to think that he used his new invisibility power to trick viewers. This theory was one that the directors addressed in the interview:
That’s to be decided. All we know is what we can gather from the film. Anything more than that can potentially be addressed down the line.
In other words, doubtful. It hasn’t stopped the odd “new ability” from becoming an internet meme and generating countless jokes. Whether or not this joke comes up again in future installments, however, is something that only the film makers can say.
Avengers: Infinity War is now playing in theaters, with a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautisa, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Rudd, Benedict Wong, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, Benicio Del Toro, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor and Josh Brolin.
