‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Writers Confirm Tesseract Was Once The Cosmic Cube

Thanos Infinity Stones Avengers Infinity WarWarning: this post includes major spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

Avengers: Infinity War writers Stephen McFeeley and Christopher Markus have confirmed the Tesseract, also know as the Space Stone, obtained by Thanos during Infinity War, initially started out as the Cosmic Cube.

In a wide-ranging interview with Collider, the writers confirmed the connection when asked about the Red Skull’s surprise appearance in the film and if that had always been the plan. It was, and the idea was planted all the way back in the character’s role in Captain America: The First Avenger:

“Obviously, we started with him, 10 years ago. And he had the Cosmic Cube, which was then referred to sometimes as the Cosmic Cube, and we didn’t know it was one of the Infinity Stones.”

In the comics, the Cosmic Cube exists, able to transform any wish into a reality, but the Tesseract does not. The Marvel Cinematic Universe never explicity referred to the Cube by name before it evolved into an Infinity Stone and eventually dubbed the Tesseract. Would you have wanted to see more from the Cosmic Cube before it was retconned? Let us know in the comments!

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautisa, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Rudd, Benedict Wong, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, Benicio Del Toro, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor and Josh Brolin.

Previous1 of 27

Avengers-Infinity-War-1Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War is nothing short of a triumph. The way that directors Anthony and Joe Russo along with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely managed to bring all of these larger-than-life characters from separate films together so cohesively and in such an entertaining manner is something to be praised. And given the epic scale of this project along with its massive ensemble, some characters get to have more satisfying arcs than others, but nonetheless – each character somehow gets to have their moment in the spotlight to shine.

Here are the majority of the characters from the remarkable ensemble of Avengers: Infinity War ranked from best to worst. Granted, none of these characters are put in the situation where the film reaches “bad” territory, but given the amount of characters involved, certain characters shine more than others. But even with that, this just goes to show how the Russo Brothers, Markus and McFeely knocked this out of the park. Start the list by clicking Next.
