When Doctor Strange made his feature film debut last year, he introduced a number of new elements and dimensions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That cinematic world will continue to expand in Avengers: Infinity War when the superhero team faces off against Thanos, who currently dwells in the cosmic corner of the MCU. In an interview with Comicbook.com, Doctor Strange production designer Charles Wood discussed his work on the upcoming Avengers film and teased an ever-expanding universe.
Wood shared his reactions to the Infinity War script and the daunting challenge it proposes.
“Any time you turn that page on this script, you’re kind of staggered, blown away, terrified by what’s in front of you.”
Wood explains that he and his production team will be tasked with creating environments that are not limited to Earth’s atmosphere.
“I think rather like Doctor Strange, you’ll find this film, it’s not regurgatative, yeah? What I’m trying to say, is, there are many, many, many new worlds to see in this film.”
Of course, this would not be the first time the Marvel Cinematic Universe has explored worlds beyond earth. However, it would mark the Avengers‘ first collective foray into the cosmic realm of the MCU should they take on Thanos on his home turf, a prospect that seems more likely as news of characters from the corners of space appearing in the film unfolds.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Infinity War will be released in theaters on May 4, 2018.
