Paramount revealed today that Baywatch will be opening one day earlier than planned, Thursday, May 25th. Originally set to open directly with Disney’s Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Baywatch is looking to gain more traction, especially with the adult demographic.
The change in date means that the film will preview on Wednesday, ahead of the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. After Ghost In The Shell‘s lackluster opening, Paramount should be hoping Baywatch is a success, especially with such a prolific cast and famous franchise to fall back on.
Based on the popular television series from the late 80’s, the franchise is being rebooted for a modern audience. Baywatch isn’t the first film to reboot a franchise based on a television show with examples including 21 and 22 Jump Street and the most recent Chips, which failed to make an impact at the box office.
Devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchanan butts heads with a brash new recruit. Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay.
Directed by Seth Gordon, the film stars Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Priyanka Chopra, and Hannibal Buress. Additionally, original TV stars David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson will also appear in the film.
Baywatch opens in theaters on May 25th.
