Becky G Wants The New Green Ranger To Be A Girl

In the third bit of Power Rangers news today, Becky G, who played the Yellow Ranger in Dean Israelite’s 2017 film, had some thoughts on the new Green Ranger. Power Rangers ended with a surprise tease about Tommy Oliver, suggesting the character will make his cinematic debut in the planned sequel. Speaking to the Mary Sue, Becky G addressed the cast’s thoughts on the next iteration of the Green Ranger.

“[Me and my castmates] talk about this all the time. We agree that it should be a girl. I think it would be so cool because we have yet to see that. Obviously, Power Rangers has been around for a very long time, but I feel like it’d be so dope if she was a chick.”

Tommy Oliver doesn’t exactly sound like a girl’s name, but who knows. In the new Power Rangers canon, Rita Pepulsa was the original Green Ranger, so having another girl take up the mantle would certainly make sense. Tommy Oliver was played Jason David Frank in Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. As the most popular Ranger, Frank reprised his role many times over the ensuing decades, as recently as 2014 in Power Rangers Megaforce. He also cameoed in this year’s reboot, alongside original co-star Amy Jo Johnson, who was interviewed with Becky G.

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discoverer they are the only ones who save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.

Directed by Dean Israelite, the film stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks and Bill Hader.

Power Rangers will be available on Digital HD on June 13 followed by the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray release on June 27.

The 2017 reboot of Power Rangers hit theaters this past weekend and, to many fans, it was successful and even garnered a favorable reaction from us. I grew up with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and one of the greatest elements of the new film was the ways in which it brought back the classic elements from the series and left ways to explore more of them in further sequels. The potential for a franchise is tempting for any studio, but to do one correctly they have to find a way to please old and new fans simultaneously. There are several things that we would love to see appear in the inevitable sequels that could make the series even greater. There’s a lot of potential and the following things will hopefully tap into that potential.
