No one can say Brian Michael Bendis is one to shy away from a challenge after he revealed that the villain for the second issue of his new Superman comic series is going to be the Nuclear Man.
Bendis confirmed the villain would be making his first comic book appearance via an Instagram post. The writer’s reasoning for bringing such a hated character to his comics was simple.
“People started challenging me to put him in my run. Challenge accepted.”

So when they first announced I was taking over Superman, @nickderington did a sketch of nuclear man from Superman 4: the quest for peace. people started challenging me to put him in my run. Challenge accepted!!! This is by @ivanreisart and you’ll find it in superman issue two #superman #superman4thequestforpeace #dcnation #dccomics #bendisdcinstatakeover
The sketch of the Nuclear Man was done by Ivan Reis who is one of the illustrators of Bendis’ new comic along with Joe Prado. Bringing the villain to the paneled pages of comics is touted as a challenge because the Nuclear Man is one of Superman’s most hated villains of all time. He was the main villain of Christopher Reeve’s Superman IV where he was created by Lex Luthor.
The film itself was received rather critically and the villain was a big part of its less than stellar reception. Bendis has shown that he understands Superman through his other works so hopefully, he can bring new life to the character. DC has seen success in adapting characters to comics in instances like Harley Quinn so there is precedence for positive results.

6 Books Brian Michael Bendis Should Write For DC
Brian Michael Bendis, the architect of the modern Marvel Universe, has finally jumped ship. The man who created Miles Morales and even wrote the post-credits scene in Iron Man has signed an exclusive contract with DC. While no details about the deal have been set, rumors are circling around the internet as to what he will do. It’s likely that Bendis will help his old friend Geoff Johns retool DC Entertainment as they expand their characters into other forms of media. But, at the end of the day, Bendis is a comic book writer and there’s no doubt in my mind that he will be announced as the writer on at least one new book coming from the publisher.
Bendis, who has written everything from Jessica Jones to The Avengers and even the Guardians of the Galaxy, is a detail oriented story teller. The buildup to series like House of M and Secret Invasion took years as he deftly weaved in hints that teased audiences about just what he had in mind. Similarly, Scott Snyder, the mastermind behind the current DC event Metal, is a meticulous plotter who weaved clues about his vision throughout years of storytelling. Now that the two are in the same sandbox, there’s no telling what DC can achieve! There are so many characters that Bendis can put his personal touch on once he begins working at DC, but there are a few books that come to mind first.
