How Benedict Cumberbatch Helped A ‘Sherlock’ Co-Star Land A Role In ‘Marvel’s Iron Fist’

Benedict Cumberbatch Marvel Iron Fist Sacha DhawanThe following post contains spoilers for Marvel’s Iron Fist.

In the ninth episode of Marvel and Netflix’s Iron Fist, Sacha Dhawan makes his debut as Davos, a character who’s better known for becoming the arch-nemesis of Danny Rand in the comics. Davos is first mentioned in passing by Danny, who refers to him as his best friend from back at K’un-Lun, but he eventually appears on the show to bring the Iron Fist back to his post at the gate of the mystical city.

The actor’s casting remained a secret for a quite a while, but now that the show is finally available to stream on Netflix, Dhawan is not only opening up about his time on set, but also how he landed his role. Speaking with UK’s RadioTimes, Dhawan revealed that he had some help from his Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch — who plays Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — with that.

“When I was on Sherlock, I was in the midst of auditioning for Marvel. We had a huge fight scene that took about three days to shoot [and involved a swimming pool]. And obviously in between takes where they’re setting up, me and Benedict would be sitting in a warm tent in absolutely soaking clothes. We had lots of time so we’d just chat and stuff. And I knew he’d done Doctor Strange, and he was asking ‘Oh, what are you doing next?

And I said ‘Actually Benedict I’m testing tomorrow for [Netflix series] Iron Fist,” and he went ‘Oh right, ok, great!’ And then pulled out his phone and started typing away on his phone. And I thought ‘that’s a bit rude!’ And he went, ‘By the way, I’m just emailing a contact at Marvel.

And I went ‘Oh!’ And he went ‘yeah yeah, I’ve put a good word in for you.’ And I said ‘Oh no, no, you don’t have to do that!’ and he went ‘No it’s my pleasure, I love working with you.

And then when we were filming, we’d just had a big punch-up in that scene and he then said ‘they’ve e-mailed me back, and they’ll pass on the message’.”

There’s no word yet on whether or not Iron Fist will be getting a second season, but Dhawan has previously mentioned that we’d likely see Davos back if it does. The character’s transformation into the Steel Serpent is something that many fans are hoping to see, but it’s too early to tell if the show will return. For now, Iron Fist fans can at least look forward to seeing Danny Rand in The Defenders, which debuts this summer.

Iron Fist
This weekend the fourth collaboration of Marvel and Netflix, Iron Fist, dropped on the streaming service. Although the first 6 episodes were panned by critics, fans spent much of the weekend binge-watching the new Marvel show. Based on social media reactions, Iron Fist was still received rather well and it looks like Marvel and Netflix once again have a hit on their hands. We here at Heroic Hollywood have been binge-watching it as well. You can see our reviews in episodic spurts here, here and here, with more to come.

Being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the street level Defenders Universe, there’s a lot of connective tissue in Iron Fist. We already know that Madame Gao, Jerri Hogarth and Claire Temple –who appeared in other properties — would be on the show. However, there is a plethora of other cool stuff that shows up on Iron Fist.
