10. Ms. Marvel
Kamala Khan might not be the first person to hold the Ms. Marvel mantle, but she’s easily the best. The first Muslim character with their own Marvel series, Ms. Marvel is a wonderful comic written beautifully by G. Willow Wilson. A member of the Challengers and Avengers, Kamala is a tough fighter but she still has a lot to learn as she evolves into a full-fledged superhero. While the book takes place on the East Coast like most of Marvel’s comics, this series actually focuses on the character’s hometown of Jersey City.
In many ways, the book feels like an update on classic Spider-Man stories. Kamala is just a kid who was inspired by the heroes around her and decided to stand up against evil. She lives by the motto “with great power comes great responsibility” as she traverses the difficulties of being a superhero and a teenager trying to have fun while protecting her secret identity all at once. No matter how hard she tries to maintain her personal and heroic lives, some things always seem to slip between the cracks.
