After the exciting news that Blue Beetle is getting his own DC film, Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña revealed he wants to play Jaime Reyes.

Although the Blue Beetle film has been in development for a number of years, it was recently confirmed that Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto will direct Jaime Reyes’ first cinematic outing. The character has appeared in live-action only once before in an episode of Smallville alongside an appearance from Booster Gold himself. But Jaime Reyes really got the spotlight in the Young Justice animated series when the scarab beetle involved an alien race of invaders. But with the progression of the movie, Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña is interested in taking on the role.

In a tongue-in-cheek video originally posted to his Instagram story, Xolo Maridueña jokingly ‘auditioned’ for the Jaime Reyes role with a brilliant video. The Cobra Kai star started to a one-armed push up to show he’s in superhero shape, before quickly falling flat on his face. It’ll be interesting to see whether Warner Bros. chooses to put Blue Beetle out on the big screen, or if it’ll go straight to HBO Max instead – as the streaming platform will seemingly develop and debut its own original DC movies. Either way, Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña seems like a great fit for the role.

Is Xolo Maridueña the right choice for Jaime Reyes on the big-screen? Who else could don Blue Beetle Scarab suit on the big screen? Sound-off in the comments below!

In DC Comics lore, Dan Garrett was an archeologist who discovered the Blue Beetle Scarab and used its power to fight crime. Though his successor, Ted Kord, was unable to harness the Scarab’s power, the brilliant billionaire took on the Blue Beetle mantle from his mentor using technology and martial arts. Years later, a teenage boy named Jaime Reyes came into possession of the Blue Beetle Scarab and used it to manifest a weaponized exoskeleton. Taking on the Beetle mantle, Jaime used the suit to fight crime alongside his two best friends Brenda and Paco.

Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, Jaime Reyes made his first appearance in DC’s Infinite Crisis #5 in 2006.
