With Daniel Craig confirmed to return as 007 and a release date for the next entry in the franchise set for 2019, the search for a new director to helm the 25th James Bond film is currently underway. While there has yet to be a woman at the helm of a Bond film in the franchise’s fifty-five-year history, producer Barbara Broccoli recently discussed the possibility of seeing a woman direct a film in the 007 series during an interview with Screen Daily.
The outlet reports that Broccoli discussed the possibility of hiring a woman to direct a Bond film while expressing her support for women in the film industry. Screen Daily writes:
“While there has yet to be a female Bond, Broccoli is keen to support women in the industry and would “of course” consider female directors for the 007 franchise.”
Broccoli discussed the importance of diversifying the film industry both in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes:
“There are a lot of women working on this production [Film Stars] which pleases me very much. It’s incredibly important to support change in front of and behind the camera. I love working with women. It’s a different vibe.”
Frontrunners for the job are reportedly narrowed down to ’71 director Yann Demange and Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve.
Skyfall and Spectre writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade will return to pen the script.
Bond 25 is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on November 8, 2019.
