Box Office: ‘Black Panther’ Scores $28.8 Million On Second Friday

Black Panther Chadwick Boseman MarvelMarvel’s Black Panther is continuing its incredible run at the box office. After scoring $28.8 million in North America this past Friday, Ryan Coogler’s Marvel feature is now on track for a massive estimated three-day weekend of $102 million.

As noted by The Wrap, Black Panther could even set a new record for the second biggest weekend by a Marvel movie if it ends up outperforming again. The current record holder is The Avengers with $103 million.

Black Panther is expected to hit $394 million at the domestic box office by the end of its first ten days, topping the entire run of last year’s highest-grossing Marvel movie in North America, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which made $389.8 million. The film recently pushed the Marvel Cinematic Universe past the $14 billion mark worldwide.

The movie features a cast that includes Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, John Kani as T’Chaka, Sterling K. Brown as N’Jobu, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Kilmonger, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue and Winston Duke as M’Baku. Here’s the official synopsis:

“Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.

Marvel’s Black Panther is finally in theaters and if you haven’t had the opportunity to check this film out yet, you absolutely should. Whether you’re a hardcore MCU fanboy, a die-hard fan of the character in comics, an admirer of one of the dozen or so amazing performers featured in this incredible cast, or just someone who wants to relish in the chance to finally see an African American superhero headline his own film on a scale such as this, you should get everything you’re looking for and more in Black Panther.

The importance of what director Ryan Coogler and company did with this film cannot be overstated. Black Panther is a massive achievement for representation in the same way that Wonder Woman was last year, and most importantly, the film totally delivered, so much so that we have a whole list’s worth of exciting and cool moments to talk about. There are dozens of great little beats, jokes, or lines of dialogue that could fill a list of their own, but these are the bigger moments that either held an emotional weight or just some really kick-ass sequences. Sometimes both.
