Box Office: ‘Coco’ Stays Number 1 In Weekend Before ‘Star Wars’

Disney Pixar CocoIt is expected to be a quiet weekend at the box office as we await the arrival of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Coco is set to take the top spot yet again with $20 million.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Coco‘s domestic total will probably stand around $137 million through Sunday, marking yet another win for the Disney-PIXAR animated juggernaut. Warner Bros. superhero team-up Justice League will hold down second place with $9 million, while Lionsgate’s surprise hit Wonder is expected to bring in $8 million for third place.

Fans of cult-hit The Room will be happy to learn that James Franco’s The Disaster Artist will take fourth place this weekend as it opens in 840 theaters. The film that tackles the making of the “worst movie ever made” took in $2.6 million on Friday for an estimated $6.7 million haul this weekend.

Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok will take fifth place as the film has soared to over $300 million domestically and over $800 million worldwide.

Here is the synopsis of box office winner Coco:

Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colourful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history. Character actress Renée Victor also joins the cast as Abuelita, Miguel’s grandmother.

Directed Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, Coco features the voice talents of Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Renée Victor and Edward James Olmos.

Coco is now playing in theaters everywhere.
