Box Office: ‘Happy Death Day’ Takes Top Spot From ‘Blade Runner 2049’

Blade Runner 2049It was another win for the horror genre this weekend as Universal’s Happy Death Day claimed the top spot at the box office from sci-fi sequel Blade Runner 2049.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Happy Death Day took in $26.5 million over the weekend against a microbudget of $5 million. This is another huge success for Universal and production company Blumhouse, who also released box office hits Get Out and Split this year.

Blade Runner 2049 dropped 54 percent to take second place with $15.1 million this weekend. The movie currently has grossed $60.6 million domestically against a $150 million budget, meaning Blade Runner 2049 has a long way to go before it sees a profit.

The Foreigner, starring Jackie Chan, placed third with $12.8 million. This film is a huge success, having already grossed $88 million worldwide against a $35 million budget without even opening in China yet. The US-Chinese co-production is all about a former military operative who comes out of retirement whose teenage daughter is killed in a terrorist attack. Chan, who plays the operative, must figure out who is behind the killing.

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women opened to an underwhelming $737,000 in limited release. The film, which tells the story of the man who created Wonder Woman, only grossed an average of $600 per screen. We’ll expect more from Wonder Woman’s next outing in Justice League.
