Jigsaw slayed its competition at the domestic box office this weekend, pulling in $16.3 million over competitors Suburbicon and Thank You for Your Service. However, the biggest box office story this weekend came from overseas, where Thor: Ragnarok has already opened and is a smashing success.
Thor: Ragnarok managed to pull in $107.6 million worldwide in its first weekend of release. Opening in roughly 50 percent of the marketplace, it won the box office in every single country it opened in except for Italy, where the final tally is still too close to call.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the third chapter in the Thor saga is expected to breathe life back into the domestic box office, after several weeks of new releases not hitting their expectations. With the overall positive reaction the film is receiving so far from fans and critics, as well as that huge financial take, it seems that theater owners will not be disappointed.
The film is expected to bow in the U.S. with $100 million plus in its first weekend, with some tracking showing the film going as high as $125 million.
Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson, Idris Elba, Karl Urban and Jeff Goldblum. You can read the synopsis for the film below:
“Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth) finds himself in a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), his former ally and fellow Avenger. Thor’s quest for survival leads him in a race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela (Cate Blanchett) from destroying his home world and the Asgardian civilization.”
Thor: Ragnarok hits U.S. theaters on Nov. 3.
