We are getting closer. Five more weeks, and the world will finally get to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But that begs the question, how much of the world? Or rather, how much will it make at the box office?
Modern success for a major studio film, such as The Force Awakens, is typically measured by it’s opening weekend bow. Just this year, we saw Jurassic World’s $208 million over take 2012’s The Avengers’ $207 million for premiere weekend supremacy.
So, what does that mean for the highly anticipated (is that even strong enough) The Force Awakens? Well reports suggest Jurassic World’s reign will have been short lived (it was very hard to avoid an extinction joke there). According to Collider, The Force Awakens is currently tracking to open to $225 million! This figure is astonishing, to put it mildly, and is $17 million above the current record.
Collider goes on to state that this is a modest prediction, as there is very little competition in Star Wars’ way. They previously reported that The Force Awakens has no competition on IMAX screens for an entire month. That, along with having the most screens, and the most show times, we may indeed be looking at a record shattering performance.
As is usual, these predictions evolve, by nature of being predictions. But with the hype, anticipation and love for the Star Wars franchise, its hard not to see it rewriting the record book when the dust settles.
What do you think of these predictions? Will it set a new opening weekend record? Let us know!
Do you have your ticket yet? As if I have to tell you, Star Wars: The Force Awakens premieres December 18th, 2015, with early screenings on December 17th.
