A new image from the first-ever Transformers spinoff Bumblebee released via Empire offers a look at Hailee Steinfeld with the titular fan-favorite Autobot in his classic Volkswagen Beetle form.

Steinfeld stars as a tomboy that holds a job as a mechanic after school. Afer forming a connection with the lovable Autobot, the two have to figure out how to manage without Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots when their lives are interrupted by evil Decepticons. Bumblebee has been directed by Travis Knight from a script written by Christina Hodson (Shut In). Transformers director Michael Bay returned to produce the film with Steven Spielberg and Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, as well as Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis.

Speaking to the magazine, Knight dished on his approach to the spinoff and how he brought his experience as CEO of Laika Studios to the project:

“I wanted to approach this massive, expansive franchise and really focus in on a tiny corner of the canvas. Everything I’ve tried to do at Laika, searching for an artful blend of darkness and light, intensity and warmth, humour and heart, I wanted to bring to the Transformers franchise.”

While plot details remain under wraps, Knight also teased a little about what to expect from the spinoff as he shared his inspiration for the film:

“At its core it’s just a beautiful love story between two broken souls who find each other and heal each other,” he adds. “I grew up loving those classic Spielbergian Amblin films. And we’re trying to evoke that kind of emotion in this movie, fusing a rich coming-of-age story with some sci-fi insanity.”

Directed by Travis Knight, the film stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr. Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, Ricardo Hoyos, and Gracie Dzienny.

“On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.  When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.”

Bumblebee is currently slated to hit theaters on December 21, 2018.
