During an interview with Fandango, Bumblebee director Travis Knight confirmed that Optimus Prime will make an appearance in the Transformers prequel.
Bumblebee will transport audiences to the ’80s, where the titular Autobot will face off against the Decepticon named Starscream. Of course, many fans have been wondering if Optimus Prime would also appear in the film and director Travis Knight has confirmed a cameo appearance by the Autobot leader:
“I can confirm that Optimus does make something of an appearance. A cameo of sorts in the film.”
Knight added that the film features a number of easter eggs for fans and newcomers to enjoy:
“We have a lot of wonderful little easter eggs that are kind of laid out throughout the film. You don’t need to know anything about the Transformers to enjoy it.”
The Bumblebee footage screened at San Diego Comic-Con revealed that Optimus Prime will appear in his G1 design via hologram.
“On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.”
Directed by Travis Knight, the film stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, Ricardo Hoyos, Gracie Dzienny, Angela Basset and Justin Theroux.
Bumblebee will be released in theaters on December 21, 2018.
