Cate Blanchett Might Still Be Interested In Doing ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

Cate Blanchett announced last week that she was going to spend the next year with her family while taking a break from acting. With the number of highly successful films she’s done, she can certainly afford to take a year off. Unfortunately for Marvel fans, this would mean that she’d be unavailable to take a role in Thor: Ragnarok.

Now, it appears that her plans are a bit uncertain. Backstage at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Gala, she revealed that she has not completely made up her mind at this time.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do, actually. After every film, you think: ‘OK, I’m done, I’m done now, that’s enough.’”

It sounds as if she’s still leaning toward a year-long hiatus, but the right film role could be enough to change her mind. And when asked if that film might be Thor: Ragnarok, she didn’t seem too opposed to the idea.

“I would love that. I’d love to get fit and punch people.”

This is hardly confirmation that she’s taking the role. But since the next Thor film will be shooting in Australia—Blanchett’s home turf—she could theoretically sign on for a role and still spend some time with her family when not required on set. Of course, this is assuming that negotiations have fallen through on her end. It’s just as possible that Marvel Studios decided not to hire the actress at some point prior to her announcement that she wouldn’t be taking any major roles this year.

Whether or not she winds up in the film, Blanchett may have inadvertently answered a long-standing question about the role she had been up to play. The three major speculations were that she would be playing either Valkyrie, the Enchantress, or Hela. A few had thought Hela to be the likeliest possibility, as Blanchett would have been able to draw from her experience playing Galadriel in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. But punching people isn’t really the primary method of attack for either Hela or the Enchantress, so the legions of fans who believed Valkyrie to be the role in question might have been right on the money.

Thor: Ragnarok does not release until July 28, 2017. Production is not supposed to begin until about June of this year. If Blanchett’s still up for a part, she should have plenty of time to make her final decision.
