Do not read any further if you have not yet seen SPECTRE. The following pertains to one of the film’s most major reveals.
Many who saw the most recent 007 film may have wondered if we’ve truly seen the last of Christoph Waltz as Ernst Stavro Blofeld. The film seemed to end rather suddenly, and the villain’s story was left somewhat open-ended. As many probably suspected already, this was not done by accident. Not only are there plans for Blofeld to return, but Waltz has actually signed on for two additional films in the Bond franchise.
Before you start speculating, however, you should know that his appearances are not set in stone.
The only way that Waltz will return as Blofeld is if Daniel Craig returns to play James Bond. This has already been the subject of great speculation, and it appears that the actor has still not completely made up his mind. This leaves the future of the franchise hanging in suspense, as a decision cannot be made regarding the next film’s villain without knowing whether or not Craig is going to be donning the tux of the classiest spy in cinematic history. As a source tells the Daily Star:
“Christoph could make a brilliant ongoing man for Bond to battle like in the old days. But the important clincher of it is that Blofeld can only work with Daniel back in the role to keep continuity.”
According to Producer Michael G. Wilson, there is a chance that Craig will return for a fifth outing as 007. The catch is that they do not currently have a contract that ties him to the role. If he decides to back out, he’s more than free to do so. The ending of SPECTRE certainly allowed for a close to the franchise, but sequels have a way of finding their way onto the screen if the cast and crew want them enough.
So Blofeld may return to antagonize Her Majesty’s Secret Service at least once more, if not twice. It just depends on Craig’s ultimate decision regarding the future of his career. As for Blofeld’s cat…well, people who saw the film probably aren’t expecting to see the Persian kitty coming back any time soon.
