The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Christoph Waltz is in talks to star in Alita: Battle Angel directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron.

Waltz would play Dr. Dyson Ido, a cybersurgeon who becomes the lead character’s (Rosa Salazar) mentor. Salazar’s character is a cyborg who loses all her memories after Ido rebuilds her. She becomes a bounty hunter on quest into her own past.

Alita: Battle Angel was long in development under James Cameron but he passed it off to Rodriguez once it became clear he would make an ever-increasing number of Avatar sequels. Fox is eager for franchises and hopes this will be one for them. Production is due to begin this fall for a July 20, 2018 release.

Waltz is coming off villainous turns in the blockbusters The Legend of Tarzan and Spectre. He just wrapped the Alexander Payne-directed Downsizing with Matt Damon and has Tulip Fever with Alicia Vikander coming next February.
